This edition of SIDACTION was a success: over 6.9 million euros in pledged donations. Last year, the pledges amounted to 5,053,000 euros.
At a time when the epidemic is sharply increasing in France and around the world, it was important during this Sidaction weekend to mobilize and remind everyone that the fight is not yet won. Links to the website helped raise awareness among internet users, with more than 40,000 visiting during the three days of the campaign (compared to 25,000 last year).
The actions of the Sidaction association are funded 95% by public generosity, which is why every commitment was more than useful. Thanks to you, we collected more than 350,000 euros in donations on our website.
SIDACTION 2006 concluded on Saturday, April 15. To date, 6,860,000 euros in pledged donations have been raised.
The significant increase in SIDACTION’s collection shows that the alarm message broadcast throughout the weekend by Sidaction’s representatives was heard by the public. The epidemic is progressing globally, affecting 14,000 people daily. In France, the latest data on new HIV diagnoses (7,000 in 2004) indicate an epidemic much stronger than supposed.
Sidaction will allocate 50% of the funds raised during SIDACTION 2006 to research, and 50% will be used to develop prevention and support for patients. With the increase in collections, the association will not only strengthen existing AIDS combat programs but also expand its actions in the field of fundamental research, support for young researchers, school and local prevention, social support in favor of those affected by AIDS, and access to care and treatment in developing countries.
Sidaction pays tribute to the HIV-positive individuals who have agreed to share their situations and living conditions, as well as to the actors in the fight against AIDS for the remarkable work they do throughout the year.
Sidaction would like to thank its donors, volunteers, city and business partners, partner television and radio stations, and other media that relayed the patients’ and HIV-positive individuals’ voices and, through their information work, helped raise awareness among the public about the urgency and importance of the fight against AIDS.
An appointment is set for next year for a new edition of Sidaction, for it is through the mobilization of all, particularly that of partners, that the association will one day overcome the greatest epidemic the world has known.
