As we continue to have no news of Franco-Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, held captive in the Gaza Strip since his abduction on June 25, 2006, the Union of Jewish Students of France, led in Nice by David Darmon, together with the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France and its president for the Southeast region, Alain Belhassen, have decided to call for a support rally to mark “1000 days of his detention.” This event will take place on Sunday, April 12 at 2:00 PM in front of the Nice Courthouse.
The French President Nicolas Sarkozy recently wrote a letter on March 13 to the young soldier’s parents to express his solidarity and confirm the relentless efforts of French diplomacy to secure his releaseโas well as the final attempts of the outgoing government of Ehud Olmert, through mediation by Egypt, which have not yet succeeded.
Beyond its gesture of solidarity, the CRIF particularly highlights the existence of numerous articles of the Charter of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) which are completely contradictory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
