In the vast space of the exhibition “Collection of Vintage Cars of H.S.H. the Prince of Monaco,” the presentation conference for the 2010 (March 15 – April 6) program of the Principality’s Spring Arts Festival was held. Under the presidency of H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover, the Secretary-General Jean-Charles Cureau and then Director Marc Monnet revealed to the press the ten main artistic events, not without first emphasizing the new priorities, always maintaining a balance between “tradition and openness”: this year, particular focus is placed on making it accessible to a younger audience, opening new collaborations with local or regional institutions like the City of Cannes or Villa Arson, and also on the desire to “break away from habits” by organizing performances in locations not typically intended for cultural productions. Among the notable innovations, for example, there is the “Spring Night and Day” aiming to reach “those who cannot come to concerts” and for whom musical encounters will be organized in “inappropriate places” between 1:00 and 6:00 in the morning.
PROGRAM AT A GLANCE
Outside the Walls
March 15, 16, 17:
Monaco is the festival’s center and its audience comes from all over the region…
Therefore, the festival also moves towards its audience with wonderful performers to discover.
Do you like Brahms? March 18, 19, 20, 21:
Brahms is one of the greats of romantic music. Classical for some, he was actually an adventurous one who was unaware of it. The piano works are emblematic of this quest between past and invention.
Music of the Mind
March 24, 25, 26:
At the end of the Middle Ages, music was displayed as a science: not a dry and abstract science, but an ideal science that expressed the perfect harmony brought by God on Earth.
Surprising Night
March 27:
Unclassifiable evening, between metal music, classical music performed by a rock group that is not actually one, a revisited fashion show, and a group of musicians playing with vegetables. A must-see with no inhibitions!
Around the Russian Ballets
March 28, 29 & April 1:
To listen to the masterpieces of Stravinsky, Ravel, Mussorgsky and delve back into this daring era…
Do you like Ravel?
March 28, 30, 31 & April 3:
Ravel, a French musician closely linked to Monaco through his creation with the Russian Ballets but also for L’Enfant et les sortilèges. Portrait of a musician aesthete, a poet of sound.
World Percussions
April 2:
Without percussion, no rhythm? Let yourself be surprised by all these musicians from around the world! A must-see!
Surprise Journey
April 4:
The journey continues… Always innovative, always surprising… but secret.
Do you like dance?
April 5:
It’s not enough to celebrate the anniversary of the Russian Ballets! One must learn from them… and that’s what we propose, by taking the risk of creation. Four musical and choreographic creations will be offered for the pleasure of the eye and ear.
Portrait Lachenmann
March 20 & April 6:
After Dutilleux, Boulez, Kurtág, and Kagel, here is Lachenmann, a contemporary German composer, refreshing and particularly surprising.
