“No one buys my albums but that’s no reason not to sing my songs!” Stéphane Mondino has a sense of humor. He doesn’t take himself too seriously and continues to believe in his lucky star. Success in music is a game of chance, like flipping a coin or getting a good bounce in rugby. A comparison that should please Régis Jouve, former rugby player, lover of the oval ball and especially Stéphane Mondino’s manager. Stéphane feels a slight bitterness about the artistic world: “The media are increasingly difficult to convince and the market is tough. The few spots are taken by detergent sellers…I feel like it’s always been difficult, even in the days of our predecessors, like Ferré, Brassens…You have to fight, but there are also wonderful people who support us.” Régis is there for that.
Stéphane has been singing for sixteen years now. And he sings well. Two albums (Saint Lazare in 2004 and Roll Over in 2007) and soon a third one (“Les Vents Tourneront”). The wind of success, let’s hope! The lyrics are well crafted. They speak of emotions with melancholy, of outbursts with accuracy, of injustice with relevance. “Monnaie” is an offbeat track about the ephemeral and calculated successes of “commercial” singers. “Roll Over” evokes the premature deaths of star rockers. To better situate the style, it is common to make sometimes fortuitous comparisons. In this little game, we might say that Stéphane Mondino has some aromas of James Blunt, less commercial and more authentic.
