Valentine’s Day: Love or Commerce?

Latest News

jpg_Image-2.jpgOver the years, Valentine’s Day has taken on a surprising significance. A week before the holiday, stores are decorated in red and adorned with hearts to attract couples. Yet, some time ago, Valentine’s Day didn’t necessarily mean a gift. Josiane and Hubert have been married for 52 years, and for them, this holiday is purely commercial. “We’ve never celebrated it since we got married. In the 50s, this holiday had no importance. Today, it’s blown out of proportion,” explains Hubert. His wife adds, “We don’t wait for Valentine’s Day to enjoy ourselves.”

For others, this holiday is just another day. “It’s commercial! There’s no need to wait for February 14th to prove your love,” exclaims Rosleine, 19. Some see no interest in it. Leïla has been with Mohamed for a year. But he finds no interest in this holiday, much to his girlfriend’s disappointment: “I love Valentine’s Day! I love my boyfriend every day. But February 14th is a way to prove it even more!”

Valentine’s Day: A Beautiful Tradition

There are still some die-hard enthusiasts. This is the case for Monique and Odette. The latter has been married for 60 years and has always celebrated Valentine’s Day: “It’s not an obligation, we enjoy ourselves!” Her friend Monique, married for 56 years, agrees: “Plus, we know the little tricks: we choose our own gifts. Then, our husbands come to buy them,” she says with a smile.

For most couples, this holiday is becoming increasingly commercial. But they see it as a good way to share their love. Lou is 47, she got married in 2007, and for her, Valentine’s Day has its perks: “It’s a commercial holiday, but it’s a good idea! It’s the only holiday reserved for lovers. It encourages couples to be attentive.”

We are prepared for Valentine’s Day. Just a few steps down the street make it clear. Almost all stores encourage buying a gift for the one you love. As a result, some feel compelled to give a present for this holiday. Samuel leaves a lingerie store, package in hand. For him, “it’s an obligation. It’s like Christmas; this date arrives so you know you have to find a gift.” Others still count down the days until the dreaded holiday, but they don’t rush either. Patrick has to find a gift, but he’s dragging his feet and keeps postponing shopping: “I have to give my wife a gift. If I don’t, I’ll face a real domestic scene! But for now, I have no idea…”

But be careful, there’s only until Saturday to find the ideal gift… Because Sunday will be the big day.
