AS Monaco Basketball has submitted its file to join National 1. The FFBB still needs to validate this candidacy. Monaco – Berck could open the season on September 18.
The future of AS Monaco Basketball remains suspended on a decision by the French Basketball Federation (FFBB). After several weeks marked by the administrative and sporting difficulties of the club, the Roca Team is now preparing for a possible arrival in National 1.
AS Monaco Basketball formally submitted its registration file on September 1, 2026. The candidacy must now be examined by the Federal Board. No specific deadline had been communicated in advance, but a decision is now expected imminently.
The NM1 schedule currently provides for a match between Fos-sur-Mer and Berck on Friday, September 18 at 8:30 p.m. This scheduling could however change with Monaco’s possible integration. A matchup Monaco – Berck is already being discussed for this first day. The northern club is even anticipating this possibility.
Monaco – Berck already prepared behind the scenes
The possibility of a trip to Monaco was mentioned on Friday, September 4 during the presentation of ABBR’s squad. President Bruno Fiolet prepared his group for the possibility of a first match against the Roca Team. « I think it’s better to play them now while they’re not yet ready. Even though we may not be quite ready either », declared the Berck president to our colleagues at La Voix du Nord.
National 1 clubs are therefore already mobilizing while waiting for the FFBB verdict. Validation of the Monégasque file constitutes an essential step before any official modification of the schedule.
The FFBB must issue its final decision and formalize the National 1 schedule by Friday, September 18, 2026, the scheduled date for the official start of the season.
For AS Monaco Basketball, another question remains. With what squad could the Roca Team start a possible season in National 1? The makeup of the group set to resume competition remains unknown even though it should be built around its training center.
Prince Albert II calls for the club to be rebuilt
In this context, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco has spoken about the situation of AS Monaco Basketball. The Sovereign calls for clarity and responsibility to enable the club to start again on solid ground. H.S.H. Prince Albert II believes that « the situation of AS Monaco Basketball is for many of us synonymous with deep disappointment and calls for clarity and responsibility ».
The Sovereign also recalls the difficulties encountered by the club in 1991. A period that constitutes a precedent in the history of AS Monaco Basketball. The objective now is to allow for sustainable reconstruction. H.S.H. Prince Albert II believes that the club « must now be able to rebuild on solid ground », after several seasons marked by the development of the Roca Team on the European stage.
The message also concerns the entire Monégasque ecosystem. « Behind the professional team, there are employees, young people, managers, volunteers, supporters and an entire sports ecosystem that must be preserved », emphasizes the Sovereign.
Stability, transparency and local roots are also at the heart of this reconstruction. The Princely Government offers its support for this new phase.
AS Monaco Basketball wants to start again in National 1
In its statement, AS Monaco Basketball confirms for its part the desire to open a new chapter. The club can rely in particular on the support of its new reference shareholder whose name should be revealed in the coming days, the authorities of the Principality, its supporters and its partners.
The training center must play an important place in the project. Reconstruction must also concern sporting, economic and societal dimensions. The project provides for a gradual return to the top level of French basketball. The club intends to regain, in time, a place on the European stage.
H.S.H. Prince Albert II also addresses a message to the players, staff and supporters of the Roca Team. « These difficulties must be overcome collectively, with ambition and responsibility », insists the Sovereign.
In the coming days, the FFBB’s decision must therefore clarify the immediate future of AS Monaco Basketball. A validation would pave the way for a new season in National 1 and could confirm a first match against Berck on September 18.
At this stage, Monaco – Berck remains nonetheless an unofficial fixture, as does the squad with which the Roca Team could begin this new adventure.
