The law concerning solidarity and urban renewal, commonly known as the SRU law, states that each municipality belonging to an urban community of more than 50,000 inhabitants must produce a minimum of 20% social housing. This is calculated based on the number of primary residences in the municipality.
As the regional elections approach, Patrick Allemand, Municipal Councillor, and his counterpart Paul Cuturello, spoke to the press about the Local Housing Program (PHL) of the Nice Côte d’Azur urban community. The goal of this program: the construction of social housing between 2010 and 2015. Currently, Nice Côte d’Azur is far from meeting this quota: the urban community currently has 26,262 social rental housing units instead of the 50,241 required by the law.
Paul Cuturello, Municipal Councillor, denounces the fact that the urban community does not fulfill the requirements of the SRU law. Between 2010 and 2015, the PHL plans the construction of 6,340 new housing units. If the objectives of the SRU law are fully met, 13,948 new housing units, in addition to the 26,262 existing units, should be in place by 2020, the SRU law’s deadline. However, there will still be a shortfall of 10,031 due to accumulated delays.
