and the same cultural origins! Stop the division of our
people of Nice and no to the sorcerer’s apprentices.”
“As a Nissart, I am hurt by the negative use and the
attempt to hijack our noble culture with hate. A culture
that finds its very distant origins well rooted in the Mediterranean basin.
We firmly oppose the identitarian approach, which is the
opposite of the supportive regionalism open to the European and Mediterranean realities that we advocate.
Our beautiful and rebellious Occitan language is part of a context
of international exchanges steeped in History. Born from
Romance, itself heir to Latin, sister to all other Romance languages,
our language has been enriched over a millennium by the contributions of
all the civilizations it has encountered on its soil, notably
the Arab-Muslim civilization that thrived in North Africa
and shone for a long time in Spain.
We are proud of this heritage that demonstrates that languages and
cultures are created through exchange and built together with all the
inhabitants of the territory without exclusion, over the generations. It is
an extended hand to the other, a commitment to the future, a rejection of
inward withdrawal and any closed and confined identity. Our land
is a land of welcome and tolerance, as it has always been.
No to a racist aperitif in Nice. I call upon the representative of the
Republic and the Mayor of my City to refuse this unnecessary and
infamous provocation at a time when tens of millions of our neighbors
are mobilizing for freedom at the risk of their lives.”
