This upcoming Sunday, the New Year’s sporting event in Nice kicks off with the Prom’Classic, the race event organized by Sport Azur.
The 14th edition will once again be performance-oriented with a lineup of quality athletes. The lead race will once more have all the spotlights focused on it. The winner is expected to finish around 10:28 am on the Promenade des Anglais.
On the men’s side, the Strasbourg native Driss EL HIMMER is considered one of the top favorites of the competition. France’s record holder for most French Cross Country Championship titles (8 titles) and the second fastest French marathon runner of all time, he holds a personal best of 28’13’’ on 10km.
For the women, Christelle DAUNAY is undoubtedly the top favorite in the competition. Holding the French marathon record at 2h24’22’’, the half-marathon record at 1h08’34’’ in 2010, the 10000m record at 31’35’’81, and the Prom’Classic record at 32’44’’, her achievements speak volumes.
A bit of history…
Since January 2, 2000, the Prom’Classic in Nice has welcomed more than 30,100 runners on the famous strip of the Promenade des Anglais.
The Prom’Classic continues to attract more runners each year. Is it the post-holiday atmosphere, the first rays of sunshine, the festive ambiance, or the presence of the best French champions? In any case, the Prom’Classic always fills up with runners and generates growing interest over the years.
The greatest names in running have always been present to participate in this first race of the year. Whether it’s David RAMARD, Augusto GOMES, Christelle DAUNAY, Fatima Yvelain, or Benoît Z, all have contributed to the growth and success of the Prom’Classic by recording their names and performances in the race’s history.
The main attractions of the Prom’Classic are undoubtedly its exceptional course entirely on the Promenade des Anglais and its always mild climate for the month of January.
Thanks to a continuously growing number of participants and an increasing density of performances, notably due to the event record set by Saïd TBIBI in 2007 with a time of 28’38’’, the Prom’Classic has held the top spot in the rankings of the most beautiful 10km races in France since 2010!
It is thanks to these numerous advantages that the Prom’Classic attracts and retains its many runners since its very first edition. The temptation to participate in this first event of the year is so great that in recent years, the race sells out several days before the main event.
In 2007, the Prom’Classic experienced a historic event! For the first time since its creation and for the first time in Nice, the famous Promenade des Anglais was completely closed to traffic, allowing the Prom’Classic to offer its participants an exceptional start on both lanes! Moroccan Saïd TBIBI created a surprise by setting the event record at 28’38’’.
In 2010, the 10th anniversary of the Prom’Classic allowed the event to gain even more notoriety and participation, as this 11th edition became the first 10 km race in France with a record 5700 registrants, and it maintained first place in 2011 by recording a new record of participants: 6100 registrants! Unprecedented!
In 2012, the Prom’Classic once again broke its participation record with 7000 registrants!
