A few years after the end of the Second World War, the French Republic decided to honor the memory of the victims of deportation, particularly the deportees from France to Nazi concentration or extermination camps. Since the adoption of the law on April 14, 1954, the last Sunday of April has been dedicated as the “National Day of Remembrance for Victims and Heroes of Deportation.”
This day primarily recalls this major historical tragedy and the lessons learned from it. Secondly, through this celebration, the nation honors the memory of all deportees, including those who were victims of deportations in Indochina due to Japanese imperialism, both survivors and those who perished, to pay tribute to their sacrifice.
