Many people gathered to witness this historic stage in Nice. Nearly 60,000 people attended this return of the Tour de France to the azure land, 32 years after the last passage. A popular success that united all social classes and ages.
From Place Massรฉna to the Promenade des Anglais, the public came out in droves. Tourists, locals from Nice, sports enthusiasts, or cycling fansโthey all enjoyed the spectacle given by the riders.
Despite the heat and crowd, Jeannine, 76 years old, insisted on being there for this international event: “I rarely go out to watch sports, but this is unmissable. My father often talked to me about these legendary cyclists who traveled through France. I wanted to feel that passion, but I must admit I am also here for my grandchildren.” The cyclists race by at an incredible speed, and the crowd applauds, cheers, and expresses their joy at the champions’ exploits.
With state-of-the-art equipment and aerodynamic helmets, the Tour de France riders certainly impress. Yet they remain accessible to the public. To delight the fans, the riders’ training is open to the public just a short walk from the start line. It’s a dream for all these children, happy to see their heroes up close. Gรฉrard, who came from Pas de Calais, took the opportunity to attend the stage: “We came as a family to see the tour. What better than to combine passion and vacation. I’ve seen quite a few stages, including some at Alpe d’Huez, but here it’s pleasant to watch by the sea and in the shade of palm trees.”
After three days in Corsica, the tour was not disoriented by the Cรดte d’Azur’s climate. The climate favored the Orica team, leading the time trial ahead of the Omega Pharma team. The Australian team achieves a double victory as Simon Gerrans, winner of the 3rd stage, takes hold of the Yellow Jersey.
