Where to see the artists and the works we appreciate? Where to see the major works of recent years? Where to see the latest trends?
A website (www.artsguide.fr) has been developed alongside the print guide, allowing the integration of videos for a virtual tour of artistic venues, geolocation, and real-time updates for event announcements (openings, performances, etc.). artsguide© will be the first cultural guide in our territory to have a free iPhone/iPad application.
Friendly, varied, practical, easy to read, and linked to current events, this guide, set to be released on June 28, is the ideal tool to explore the main venues where the best of our region’s art is presented. A fruitful journey through the diversity of places where contemporary art can be seen.
The PACA region, a history of art and culture
From the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, our region saw the arrival of many major artists, drawn by the sun, the light, or to reunite with friends: Signac in Saint-Tropez, Matisse in Nice, Picabia in Saint Raphaël, Soutine in Cagnes, Dufy in Nice, Picasso in Mougins, Dubuffet in Vence, etc.
In their wake, major museums were born: Picasso in Antibes, Léger in Biot, the Maeght Foundation in Saint Paul as well as very active galleries: Hervieu, Matarasso, and Sapone in Nice, Chave in Vence.
Simultaneously, in 1946, the first Cannes Film Festival was inaugurated, and in 1948, the first Jazz Festival in the world (featuring among others Louis Armstrong, Milton Mezzrow, the quintet of the Hot Club of France, etc.).
From the 1950s to the 1960s, several creative “circles” were at work. These “idea laboratories” were driven by individuals who attracted around them numerous creators who, from Yves Klein to Sophie Calle, covered the fields of a very active contemporary art. From Marseille to Nice, dozens of museums, hundreds of exhibition venues, and associative structures are emerging, working for the art “of here and now.”
The sun, the beach, and the beauties of our south today accompany visits to museums and galleries. Art and culture enthusiasts, or simply curious individuals wanting to know more, flock to the increasingly numerous cultural venues in one of the richest regions in the world for modern and contemporary art. artsguide© is aimed at them to guide them in this playful and cultural journey of discovery.
