This festival is like a fine wine, it improves with age, and this eleventh edition confirms it. Note the prestigious program, which will start this Friday, September 7th, with “Mediterranean” at the Théâtre de Verdure.
The performance of Francis Lopez’s masterpiece is, as Mrs. Rampal, deputy mayor, says: “A nod to the repatriates, the pieds-noirs who, fifty years ago, had to leave their country, Algeria.” Melcha Coder, herself a pied-noir and co-organizer of this festival, emphasized the importance of this symbol.
Operetta is not a minor art. Everyone agrees to recognize operetta as an art in its own right. It still enjoys great success in Nice with a dedicated audience.
It’s important not to forget that at the end of the 19th century, Nice was one of the capitals of operetta. All the ruling families of Europe would come to our shores to meet for the winter season, and performances, including operettas, were numerous.
This 11th festival was born out of a challenge and determination. A challenge by a woman, Melcha Coder, and a determination by the association ‘Contre Ut’. Make no mistake, these volunteers have the commitment of true professionals. This festival matures year after year, refines itself, and attracts leading artists who come to perform.
It should be noted, as Mr. André Chauvet, the municipal councilor in charge of the opera, wanted to remind us, that it is the first time the Operetta Festival will take place on the lyrical stage of rue Saint François de Paule.
Operetta allows newcomers to discover the art of opera in a fun way, so yes: welcome to the Opera!
