Fear is the beginning of wisdom (Ages of Life by Franรงois Mauriac). And now Jean-Christophe Picard’s PRG, which had been sidelined in recent years and was a running mate of Olivier Bettati in the 2014 municipal elections, is returning to the fold of the reformist left to confront the likely onslaught of the right (still republican?) and the far right in the departmental elections next March.
If the outcome is anticipated, and no one doubts that Eric Ciotti will succeed himself (at least until the regional election in December), the UMP/FN mano a mano risks being the only outcome for many second rounds with the PS and its allies as mere spectators.
What a beautiful prospect!
The rallying of the left, a sort of reissue of the Union of the Left whose memory still evokes nostalgia, has appeared as an inevitable solution to save face and still be present within the departmental institution.
Politics is not just an intellectual testimony, and having a few elected officials serves to make one’s voice heard and, in the worst case, to merely put in an appearance!
“The mission is difficult but not impossible,” declares Xavier Garcia, the first federal socialist secretary of the department, who is the mainstay of this rapprochement.
“The memory of the 1998 election with 5 left-wing representatives elected still sends shivers down our spines,” adds Paul Cuturello, the party’s electoral officer.
The contents of this agreement, which adds to the one signed last week with the MRC of Ladislas Polski, have not been disclosed, except concerning the presence of some departmental candidate places: Apart from the tireless and often effective familial duo Patrick Mottard and Dominique Boy-Mottard, the PRG has indicated that it has three other candidates in the running whose names have not been released: one will compete in the Nice 2 canton, and the two others in Grasse 1 and Menton.
Currently, only the Green Ecologists and the… Left Front are missing!
While the latter is increasingly caught up in its “pseudo-revolutionary” flights of fancy, the Green Ecologists have learned to be a bit more realistic and not to ask for the moon in hopes of perhaps grabbing a few stars…
