The Floral Naval Battle of Villefranche-sur-Mer

Latest News

Since 1902, the flower naval battle has been an event not to be missed. This year, people from around the world gathered at the port of Villefranche-sur-Mer to enjoy this tradition unique to the region.

Starting at 1 p.m., drums can be heard in the fortified city. The crowd gathered at the port eagerly awaits the flower throwing. Spectators step aside for the flag throwers, marching bands, and majorettes, all marching straight toward the port and its flower-adorned boats.

Once they reach the quays, the musicians play one after the other, prompting the audience to dance to the rhythm of brass and percussion instruments.

To decorate the 20 boats present, no less than 30,000 carnations, 600 kg of mimosas, 900 bouquets, and 80 boxwood garlands were needed. The boats are “pointus,” typical southern French boats passed down from generation to generation, inheriting a unique culture.

For Philippe, a local resident, the flower battle is always a unique moment. “Every year I participate in the event and itโ€™s beautiful to see people coming from everywhere to witness this. As always, the atmosphere is festive and musical.”

At 2:30 p.m., the pointus get in order and start throwing flowers at the public. In a warm and joyful atmosphere, the flower battle concluded with performances by folk groups on Amรฉlie Pollonnais Square.
