The etymology of the name is the same, but the purpose and impact will be profoundly different: between a parking lot (current) and a park (future)… There will be just a little over a year of waiting.
This is the decision that the mayor of Nice and his collaborators announced following the conclusion of the 2nd voluntary public consultation on the renovation of Rue d’Italie, to which 700 resident citizens responded (375 during the previous consultation).
Seventy-four percent requested that the area currently used as a parking lot become a green space: “This majority must be heard,” said Christian Estrosi, who, between referendums, petitions, and other consultations, has become an expert in interpreting figures.
Thus, it will be a garden of just over 1,500 m2 with two areas for children’s games, which will come to fruition after the summer of 2016.
In the meantime, Rue d’Italie, which runs alongside the Notre-Dame Cathedral, will become semi-pedestrianized, with the sidewalk being widened following the same model as Rue de Suisse.
The beautification of the neighborhood thus continues within the framework of the PNRQAD, which also includes ongoing work at Thiers train station and those that will start on Rue Vernier, particularly in Cour Bensa and around Square Jeanpierre.
In parallel, interventions are planned and partially initiated concerning urban renovation, with the acquisition of buildings and furnished hotels that will then be rehabilitated, as well as businesses for revitalizing the neighborhood.
