On Sunday, the 10th Ironman of Nice will take place. A giant triathlon: 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km of cycling, and 42 km of running. Who will succeed Frederik Van Lierde, the three-time winner of the event? Tyler Butterfield, Bart Arnaoudts, and Victor Del Coral are considered favorites.
In reality, the flagship event is accompanied by other initiatives that will not fail to attract many participants and a large audience.
The “Ironman” triathlon will start at 6:25 AM and expects the last runner to finish around 10:30 PM.
The Ironkids races offer two options: an “Irongirls” race,
a 5 km run (from 9 AM to 9:45 AM) and 4 “Ironkids” races, Swimming from 50 to 200 meters / Running from 400 to 1500 meters from 10 AM to 11:10 AM.
As with all these events, a village is operational and, in fact, designed to prevent citizens and occasional visitors from strolling along the Promenade des Anglais.
Of course, we are all delighted that this event, like many others, brings fame to the city and supports the business activities of hotels, restaurants, and other businesses.
However, it remains that citizens who pay their local taxes and tourists who must pay a tourist tax have the same rights as the organizers of professional activities, even if wrapped in an associative status.
The city will, of course, receive a fee for the services rendered, but it would be interesting to know the final management accounts to see how the costs are distributed and who receives certain profits!
Finally, a Promenade des Anglais transformed into a genuine souk, is it really the image that should support the “Prom’s” candidacy for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List…
