A truck drove into a crowd on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), on Thursday, July 14, resulting in at least 70 deaths.
The truck driver was “shot.” Only the police fired at the vehicle, whose front window is riddled with bullets. According to the Ministry of the Interior, there is no mention of a hostage situation in the city. However, “investigations are currently being conducted to determine if the individual acted alone or if he had accomplices who might have fled,” stated its spokesperson.
An “extremely heavy toll.” The Nice prosecutor’s office mentions at least sixty dead. Earlier, the prefecture spoke of “a hundred injured.” An “extremely heavy toll” due to the truck traveling a distance of 2 km on the Promenade des Anglais. The Orsec plan has been activated.
The reaction of Christian Estrosi, president of the Metropolis, and Philippe Pradal, mayor of Nice, was immediate: “This is the worst tragedy in the history of Nice as more than 70 victims are already to be mourned because of this driver who was shooting at sight while driving into the crowd. We are terrified and we wish to extend our sincere condolences to all the families affected.”
