Our article on the security situation of the Nice-Nord skate park has led to some developments that we are happy to report.
Ultimately, a common resolve has emerged: To create conditions that protect this site’s recreational activities from disturbances caused by individuals who have no business being there.
As Stéphane Robinson, president of the skateboard club, stated: “I hope this contribution will help us achieve the sole goal we strive for in this city: To practice and promote skateboarding in calm and supportive conditions.”
In response to political and community reactions to my intervention on the Nice-Nord skatepark, Gaël Nofri wanted to clarify:
“Contrary to what I may read or hear, I NEVER spoke of questioning the existence of this infrastructure. Although I dispute the appropriateness of the location chosen by the municipality, I believe that the investments made commit us to sustaining this site. That is why I have urged the municipality to find suitable solutions quickly to the problems and nuisances that exist today.”
And to conclude:
“As for the ‘security’ rhetoric I am accused of promoting, I unapologetically stand by it. I believe that in a state where the rule of law prevails, the foremost duty of public authorities is to guarantee security, without which there is no liberty, justice, or happiness. I assert that everyone has a right and a need for security: the residents of Nice Nord should be able to enjoy their peace without inciting outraged reactions. Likewise, I believe that families and skatepark users also have the right to not feel threatened when they come to enjoy a municipal sports facility.
It would be beneficial if, instead of confining themselves to posturing and ideological diatribes, people began to see realities as they are, rather than how their outdated idealism wishes to fantasize them.”
