Basketball: Cavigal on its momentum

Latest News

After their success on Wednesday in the Eurocup, Cavigal followed up on Saturday night at Leyrit with a victory against Lyon in the 9th day of the Women’s Basketball League. The final score was 66-56 for the Niçoises, who claimed their fourth championship win.

The Niss’Angels got some breathing room last night by defeating Lyon. Thanks to this success, the Azuréennes remain at the top of the LFB. They currently hold the fourth spot in the standings, pending Sunday’s matches.

Against the Rhone team, Cavigal once again relied on an omnipresent Victoria Macaulay for scoring, rebounds, and blocks. She finished the game with 15 points, 13 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. Romy Bar, the Azuréenne captain, also had a strong performance with 21 points. A special mention goes to Alix Duchet, who was very valuable coming off the bench for Cavigal.

A Dominant Fourth Quarter

Even though Rachid Meziane’s players generally dominated the game, it wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Leyrit players truly made their mark. They capitalized on their opponents’ fatigue to make the decisive blow, particularly through Romy Bar who scored two long-distance shots. Cavigal then took a 12-point lead with three minutes left in the game. This proved too big of an advantage for the Lyonnaises, who could not make a comeback.

The Niçoises now have a meeting on Wednesday night in Switzerland, for their fifth European match of the year against Fribourg. They will then face the Déferlantes of Nantes next Saturday.
