The City of Sospel and the Alpes-Maritimes Heritage Foundation signed a partnership agreement today to launch a public subscription for the restoration of the Maginot work of Agaisen in Sospel.

The Maginot Line of the Alps was built between 1930 and 1937 along the Italian border. One of its main forts, the Agaisen work above Sospel, withstood all offensives in June 1940.

This fort, designed to house 450 men, was maintained by the military engineers until the 1980s. Now owned by the City of Sospel, it is entrusted to the volunteers of the EO3-Agaisen association, who maintain it and conduct tours.

The Agaisen fort was listed in the inventory of Historical Monuments in 2016. The renovation project aims to protect the massive combat blocks from the pathologies caused by the aging of the concrete.

The first phase of work will address the Turret block, which is suffering from significant infiltrations and requires the restoration of the original protective coatings. Subsequently, other phases of work will be launched to continue the restoration of this exceptional witness to our history.
