On Wednesday, June 5, 2013, Nice lost a true Niçois, Sébastien Giaume, former President of the Nice Wrestling Club from 1970 to 2013, and organizer of the Henri Deglane challenge.
“His memory will not leave us,” declared Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice, at the time.
In his honor, “His” garden and an inner courtyard, located opposite the Serge Leyrit sports hall, a venue he frequented so much and where many generations still flourish today, will bear the name “Sébastien Giaume.”
The inauguration will take place this Friday, February 1st. The date was not chosen randomly. It is also on that Friday that the Henri Deglane challenge will open, which will be held this year on February 1st and 2nd, 2019. This competition, conceived and created in 1975 by Sébastien Giaume, has today become a world reference in the wrestling world. It is the only international wrestling competition organized by a club and the last international competition organized in France.
Sébastien Giaume distinguished himself in wrestling matches but not only that. He also fought historic battles, social battles. As a 13-year-old resistant in his father’s network, he carried out missions replacing fallen resistants. Years later, Sébastien Giaume became a generous educator, a listening ear, a CGT delegate as involved in the well-being of his colleagues as that of all Niçois. For years, he enabled the students of the château school to do sports without paying a fee.
