An individual was taken into custody in Cannes on Sunday, August 9 for glorification of terrorism, according to information from Europe 1 confirmed by a police source. Several threatening emails had been sent to the Cannes town hall, run by David Lisnard, as well as to the judicial court of Grasse.

The messages notably mentioned threats of attacks. References to the Islamic State were also included in the emails sent to the recipients.

A search conducted at the home

The individual was already known to territorial intelligence records. However, no criminal record was found in the judicial records system (TAJ), according to information reported by Europe 1.

A police intervention had also taken place the day before for swatting. This practice involves triggering a police intervention by sending a false alert to law enforcement.

A search was then conducted at the individual’s home. No elements linked to possible radicalization were discovered during this operation. Computer equipment was however seized to be exploited as part of the investigation.

The custody period should allow investigators to clarify the circumstances of the threats sent to the Cannes town hall and the judicial court of Grasse.

David Lisnard, mayor of Cannes and president of the Association of French Mayors, is also engaged in the campaign for the 2027 presidential election.
