By unveiling this plaque, the Mayor of Nice and the City Council wish to pay tribute to this artist who passed away in 1980, for his dedication and commitment to the cause of the deaf and hard of hearing.
Henri Durand Cazelles, a French expressionist painter and the first deaf drawing teacher appointed in France, founded with his close relatives Franรงoise Durand, his niece, and Denis Durand, his nephew (both born to deaf-mute parents), the association “The Cry of Silence” on December 17, 1979.
This cultural and artistic association aims to:
Gather deaf and hard of hearing adults, hearing parents of deaf children, hearing children born to deaf parents, and children to remedy their isolation.
Serve to enhance accessibility on a social level, provide information on French Sign Language (LSF), and broadly promote culture, leisure, social action, sports, and tourism.
Encourage meetings between deaf and hearing people.
