From August 25 to September 13, the Lou Babazouk gallery is hosting an exhibition by the vivacious Marie Genin. A series of photographs focused on the body and its relation to space.
This summer, the city of Nice is fortunate to be immersed in art and culture. The exhibition A Corps offers a new vision of our physical form.
The idea is to perceive the body as an object in space, like architecture. This approach is partly attributed to the artist’s parents, who are architects. The artist’s photographs are captivating and unique. Bodies are seen from an unknown angle, from which energy but also a sort of modesty emerge.
Two diptychs are placed in the middle of the gallery. They depict bodies in perfect harmony with the attached elements: the pure white moon and the sun ablaze in red. A unique alliance that immediately attracts the visitor’s eye. Four photo booths are also set along a wall. For the photographer, this format is a way to impose constraints. Constraints first in space, from an “architectural” point of view, but also in art itself with a focus on framing and lighting.
Amateur Bodies under Natural Lights
Marie Genin ensures that she uses non-professional models
for her photos. In this way, she can highlight all types of bodies, as naturally as possible. The models receive a few directives, but the photos are often moments captured “on the spot,” in a very spontaneous manner. This is felt through the photographs, which convey a great deal of sincerity. Only one series of photographs required the intervention of a contortionist, in order to explore the
body in yet another new way. The artist positions her models solely under natural lighting, which brings a lot of clarity. The photographer, hindered by the coronavirus, plans to come back even stronger in the fall. An artist to watch!
