Yesterday in the mid-afternoon, the Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes, Bernard Gonzalez, decided to extend the measures taken for the past two weeks. A decision that rubs the sports community the wrong way.

The health situation remains concerning in the Alpes-Maritimes. The territory is still classified as โ€œheightened alertโ€.

Therefore, the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes, in consultation with elected officials as well as the concerned economic and professional representatives, issued this Monday, October 12, 2020, an order extending the departmental measures to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

As a reminder

Extension until Monday, October 19, 2020 inclusive, for all the communes in the department

  • Maintaining the limit of 1,000 people for any type of events. It should be noted that this count now includes only visitors and not the organizers and technical teams.
  • Extending the ban on gatherings of more than 10 people to the entire public thoroughfare and places open to the public (except for protest demonstrations), with the exception of gatherings with a professional nature, passenger transport services, public-accessible establishments, funeral ceremonies, guided tours organized by people holding a professional card, and markets.
  • Closure of public and private sports facilities (establishments open to the public of type X and sporting activities in establishments of type L), except for activities involving school groups, extracurricular or minors, professional and high-level athletes, continuing education, and outdoor activities.
  • Closing bars from 10 pm onward. This measure does not apply to restaurants or bar-restaurants.

The CDOS 06 Speaks Out

A bit later, the president of the Departmental Olympic and Sports Committee of the Alpes-Maritimes, Philippe Manassero, commented on this decision: โ€œThere is a noticeable omission (or lie) in his communiquรฉ because the sports community was not consulted in this decision as he claims to have consulted representatives of the economic and professional sectors. Reading his communiquรฉ, one would think that sports do not generate jobs or economy. What a mistake on his part. A real slap from Prefect Gonzalez to the collective 250,000 members of the sports community in the Alpes-Maritimes.โ€
