Santo Domingo will host the 11th Ibero-American Conference of Ministers of Environment and Climate Change, for the first time in 13 years, under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. The meeting will take place as part of the meetings of the Pro Tempore Secretariat of the Ibero-American Conference organized by the country, in preparation for the 28th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled for 2023.

A crucial moment for the Dominican Republic

This event comes at a time when the world has its eyes on the Dominican Republic and on the recent achievements of President Luis Abinader in the areas of international tourism and the economy, as well as the recognition of his policies in the fields of health and environment. Recently, the Spanish NGO Mare Terra Fundaciรณ Mediterrร nia rewarded the work of Abinader and his government, and praised the late minister, Orlando Jorge Mera, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources.

Lines of action

The ministers now intend to address the priority lines of action regarding the environment, as well as the decision to advance in the joint drafting of a political consensus document to be submitted to the summit.

There is currently talk of a possible “Ibero-American Green Pact” or an “Ibero-American Environmental Charter,” based on regional agreements aimed at promoting a green, smart, and circular transition towards sustainable consumption and production models.

The ministers will also be invited to consider formulating an action, within the framework of the Ibero-American innovation strategy, aimed at promoting the contribution of science and technology.

Among the proposals that the Dominican Republic wishes to rescue and that were presented at COP26, stands out the need for climate financing as soon as possible so that the most vulnerable countries in the region can develop effective policies against global warming.

Proposals for the conservation and protection of the oceans and a shift towards a nature-based economic development model will also be presented during the meeting.

The meeting will also allow for sharing reflections, experiences, and proposals for action to tackle the challenges faced by countries in the aftermath of the crisis generated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
