Tennis: Winning Return for Fiona Ferro in Barranquilla

Latest News

After a three-week break to recharge her batteries, Fiona Ferro was back on the courts. She headed to Colombia and the Barranquilla tournament to begin her preparation for the US Open.ย

Clay courts are behind her; now it’s time for hard courts. At the Barranquilla Challenger, Fiona Ferro needed to play several matches to regain her confidence. Indeed, the Azurรฉenne is coming off a series of three matches without a win. To accomplish this, she had to overcome the obstacle of Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov (25 years old, ranked 116th in the world). Originally from Moldova, she now competes under the Spanish flag. She is known for reaching the Round of 16 at the French Open in 2018.

On paper, the match seemed balanced, especially since Fiona Ferro also has a Round of 16 at the French Open as her best result. However, the match quickly turned one-sided. More agile and technically comfortable, the Azurรฉenne is far superior to her opponent. While Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov tried to leverage her powerful forehand, she was largely outplayed. The first set was closely contested up to (3-2) before Ferro accelerated. Falling behind in most rallies, Bolsova, the tournament’s No. 4 seed, lost her way and the first set (6-2).

The rest of the match didnโ€™t go any better for her. Fiona Ferro maintained her pace and overpowered the Spaniard in less than 30 minutes. The score is decisive (6-2 / 6-1) in 1 hour and 13 minutes. This is good news for the French player, who will next face a compatriot, Elsa Jacquemot.ย ย
