Despite the loss to Portel, the Antibes Sharks are guaranteed to compete for a third consecutive season in the first division (Pro A).
The off-season promises to be turbulent after a very challenging year.
Itโs done! Eight days after a crucial victory against the bottom team, Nancy, and four days after the win at Le Mans, Julien Espinosaโs men have secured their spot. Thanks should go to Strasbourg, who, after being challenged for a long time, defeated Orlรฉans at the end of overtime. The Sharks now count 11 wins in 32 matches and could finish at best in 13th place by next week.
Failed recruitment, repeated injuries
With the league’s lowest salary cap and second-to-last budget, Antibes hoped to replicate a beautiful 2015-2016 season (12th after coming within one victory of playing in the Leaders Cup). But no two seasons are alike. The summer proved challenging despite re-signing Will Solomon and Tim Blue. The departure of Mam Diarra, a leading and eminent captain, left a void in the locker room. Additionally, the arrival of Tre Simmons, who was quickly injured, and the poor start to the season by Isaia Cordinier did not help the teamโs development. Antibes also suffered from Kenny Gaines’ 4-month injury, Sharrod Curry’s sudden departure, and the recurring underperformance of the bench.
Blassingame “the Messiah”
The sports staff responded in the best possible way by extending Max Kouguere’s contract, who was several times named MVP of the game. The Chris Otule deal turned out to be a very good move. He formed a formidable partnership with Tim Blue, often feared by opponents. Towards the end of the season, the club made a masterstroke with the arrival of Jerel Blassingame, a 35-year-old experienced point guard. The American immediately made his mark both on and off the court, delivering three standout performances. The last two months of competition were also marked by the return to form of Isaia Cordinier, a real asset to the team.
And now?
In the short term, the future still seems focused on staying in the league. The arena thrilled during the French Cup run, with a memorable quarterfinal against Monaco. The average attendance remains around 2,300-2,400 spectators at each match. It has to be said, it wouldn’t take much for the Azur Arena to light up with an occasionally fervent crowd… Now itโs time for a studious summer for president Frรฉdรฉric Jouve and Julien Espinosa.
