The stakes were high because showing, a week after his election, that political maneuvering was back due to a disagreement over the number of Modem candidates in the legislative elections would have immediately squandered the novelty and innovation that Emmanuel Macron wants to bring through his persona.
So, in 24 hours, the new President of the Republic reached an agreement with his ally from the outset, François Bayrou, and an accord was achieved: “We made progress on extremely important questions for the future of the majority,” stated Mr. Bayrou, who had refused to give his “consent” to the list of 428 names unveiled Thursday by LRM, believing that the MoDem had been shortchanged by only securing about forty nominations when they demanded around a hundred.
Under the terms of the draft agreement, the future majority expected to emerge from the elections on June 11 and 18 is “central, balanced, and pluralistic,” Mr. Bayrou celebrated.
At the local level, there are also some issues. The announced candidates are not all approved by Modem 06 but… “For us at MoDem 06, the alliance must at all costs be maintained and there are margins for rebalancing, such as the remaining constituencies and government members, etc.,” affirms Fabien Bénard, its president.
Even if the expectations were different: “Locally we are disappointed* and await the very rapid appointment of our candidate, from civil society in the 5, Nice and Montagne, who will campaign for a project and not against any particular incumbent!” is his conclusion.
