Once the disarray is evacuated and the emotion has subsided, what remains is the analysis to try to understand why there is so much barbarity.
Now that the dead in Barcelona have joined the hundreds of victims of terrorism in the name of a perverted and manipulated Islam, we need to ask at least two questions:
– What is the origin of this soulless barbarity?
– Why are young people exchanging their lives and instinct for self-preservation with the desire for death for themselves and for the innocents they plan to kill?
The answer is metaphysical. The death celebrated, desired beyond reason, is a death perceived from a perspective where religion reaches the ultimate sacrifice, even more valued by the death of other innocents. It follows one thought: to offer one’s own life by killing those who do not identify with one’s own thoughts.
These innocents must disappear because they do not fit into their worldview, a unilateral, totalitarian vision, without any possibility of confrontation and dialogue.
From there, we must acknowledge that our way of thinking, our rationality, our vision of life and death has no weight in the face of a fierce will to die and to kill others.
For them, it is only about destroying a way of life and values that must disappear.
The battle to counter them will be long and, above all, cultural. Its aim is the preservation of democracy and its values, the first of which is freedom.
