On July 5, 1962, in Oran, a massacre of hundreds of people took place. The city of Nice wanted to pay tribute to the victims for this sad 62nd anniversary.

The ceremony commemorating the massacre of July 5, 1962, in Oran took place in Alsace-Lorraine Park. 62 years later, the president of the Center for Documentation on the History of Algeria (CDHA) made it a point to recall the tragic history of the massacre. Two days after the recognition of Algeria’s independence and a few hours before its proclamation, the massacre began at 11:15 AM. “The number of 700 dead is announced. Jean-Pierre Chevènement indicates that his services counted 807 victims” announced the president of the CDHA.

Christian Estrosi, Éric Ciotti, local officials, and representatives of various associations laid wreaths. The Municipal Guard Orchestra then played The Marseillaise and The Song of the Africans, in honor of the victims, to conclude the ceremony.
