In Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes, multiple clean-up operations will be organized throughout this September. Thanks to national and especially local associations such as Nice Plogging, the azure city is trying to find new life.
The World Cleanup Day, launched in Estonia in 2008, quickly gained a foothold in France. Since then, every third Saturday of September, large-scale clean-up operations take place across France. Associations are not the only ones participating in this movement. In 2022, OGC Nice collected nearly 65kg of waste with the help of four sixth-grade classes from the city to demonstrate ยซ the importance of raising awareness from a young age. ยป
Nevertheless, the association does not wait for these global planet-cleaning days to conduct its operations. ยซ Throughout the year and at least five times a week ยป, Raphaรซl Georges from Nice Plogging and his volunteers clean the streets and paths of the Cรดte dโAzur. Armed with gloves, plastic bottles (for cigarette butts), and trash bags, the group covers the paths taken by tourists and locals. The goal is to clean nature from the waste polluting the landscapes of the Cรดte dโAzur but especially to raise awareness in young and old about the importance of ecology.
A decreasing interest in ecology?
The Nice Plogging association will be present this Saturday, September 20 at two locations. Volunteers and participants will collect waste along the coastal path. An initial meeting point is set at the start of the trail, and the second after Coco Beach.
However, despite the recent oceans summit, the interest in the ecological cause does not seem to have reached the hearts of the Azurรฉens. As of now, only ten participants will join the effort this Saturday, September 20 at ten o’clock. A regrettable disinterest in ecology given the urgency of the situation.
