The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco has reached a new milestone with “Mediterranean 2050”. Open since March 2025, the exhibition welcomed its millionth visitor on August 17, 2026. A figure that accompanies awareness-raising work dedicated to the fragility and future of the Mediterranean.

Since its opening in March 2025, “Mediterranean 2050” continues its journey at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco. On August 17, 2026, the exhibition crossed the threshold of one million visitors. A figure that marks a new milestone for this journey dedicated to the future of the Mediterranean.

Designed around four thematic areas, the exhibition combines interactive displays and immersive experiences. The tour notably offers a projection around a preserved and regenerated Mediterranean. The “30×30” objective, which aims to protect 30% of lands and oceans by 2030, is one of the guiding threads of this reflection.

Changing Behaviors

Attendance is the first metric. A survey of 1,378 visitors aged 18 and over also makes it possible to measure the reception of the message carried by “Mediterranean 2050”. The respondents were French or English speakers. The surveys were conducted over 30 days, between July 2025 and April 2026.

According to this survey, 98% of respondents understood that the Mediterranean is in danger and want to pass on the knowledge acquired during the visit. A proportion of 60% also affirmed that the exhibition inspired them to take concrete action to protect the sea.

Collective action emerges as another finding of the study. 70% of respondents identified it as the main lever for preserving the Mediterranean. Knowledge of Marine Protected Areas remains more limited, however. Only 43% of respondents cite them among the solutions to protect the sea.

Since the launch of the exhibition, more than 650,000 interactive challenges have been completed. These challenges are offered at the end of the tour and on the “My OCEANO Med” application. The principle is to virtually improve the state of Marine Protected Areas.

An Immersive Experience Awarded in 2026

One of the central spaces of “Mediterranean 2050” is Oceano Odyssey – Mission Pelagos. Installed in the Whale Room, the experience combines immersive scenography, scientific storytelling and audiovisual technologies. The system is based in particular on 27 4K laser video projectors and a spatialized sound environment.

This experience received two international awards in 2026. The Mondo-DR Award 2026 rewarded it in the “Museum” category. The project also received the “Red Dot: Best of the Best” from the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design 2026.

The immersive experience is now expanding beyond Monaco. An adapted three-minute version of Oceano Odyssey – Mission Pelagos is presented at Europa-Park, in the queue for Silver Star. The venue welcomes nearly 1.5 million visitors each year. With the million visitors reached in Monaco, “Mediterranean 2050” continues to carry a message dedicated to the preservation of the Mediterranean. The tour remains accessible at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, while its immersive experience continues to reach other audiences in Europe.
