Latest News

The national union coalition (CGT, CFDT, FO, CFE-CGC, CFTC, UNSA, FSU, and Solidaires) is calling for a new interprofessional strike this Thursday, October 2nd, across France. The call comes after what was deemed an unsuccessful meeting last Wednesday with Prime Minister Sรฉbastien Lecornu. In Nice, the sectors affected include education, transportation, healthcare, public services, pharmacies, and potentially the airport.

In Nice, the meeting point is set for 10 a.m. in front of the Nice-Ville station for a procession expected along Avenue Jean-Mรฉdecin and Place Massรฉna. As with September 18th, traffic in the city center could be disrupted, especially due to union gatherings and possible blockade operations. Local unions are calling for strong mobilization, despite an expected turnout slightly more modest than the previous one.

Administrations and municipal services could be impacted. The union coalition is also urging employees to escalate actions at their workplaces to keep up the pressure.

Sectors mobilized in Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes

The FSU-SNUipp anticipates around 10% of teachers on strike in primary education this Thursday. As a result, some classes or schools may be closed, but the impact is expected to be less than on September 18th, when the strike rate was 17% according to the ministry.

Railway workers (CGT, Sud Rail, Unsa, CFDT) are called to strike nationwide. Disruptions are expected on regional lines serving Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes. For now, trains are expected to run towards Monaco at the end of the day for those wishing to attend the Champions League match between the Principality’s club and Manchester City. As for buses and trams, no disruption has been announced yet. It will depend on the extent of territorial agents’ mobilization, but slowdowns are possible.

In hospitals, emergency services will be operational, but delays are expected for non-urgent consultations or exams. As on September 18th, pharmacies could be highly affected. The syndicate predicts that a large majority of pharmacies in the department will close.

No major notice has been reported for Nice Cรดte d’Azur Airport staff, but indirect disruptions cannot be ruled out.

Why a new strike?

The union coalition states that the meeting with the Prime Minister did not bring ” any concrete response ” to their expectations. In a joint statement, they declared it a missed opportunity and accused the government of remaining steadfast in its positions. The demands, therefore, remain unchanged. The abandonment of the 2026 budget project, particularly the doubling of medical deductibles, fiscal justice for the highest incomes, and enhanced resources for public services. They also demand strong social protection, refusal of raising the retirement age, and investments for a just ecological transition.

The impact of the previous mobilization

During the last union coalition mobilization, 10,000 people, according to the unions, 2,300 according to the prefecture, marched in Nice. Nationally, the ministry reported more than 500,000 protesters, while the CGT claimed a million. In the Alpes-Maritimes, the strike was marked by the massive closure of 95% of pharmacies. For this Thursday, October 2, 2025, the unions expect a more measured participation in education but aim to maintain a high level of mobilization in healthcare and public services.
