This Tuesday, April 7, the top seeds played their first match at the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000. On the agenda for the day: the farewell match of Gaël Monfils in Monaco, and the debut of world numbers 1 and 2 Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who secured victories in 2 sets against Sebastian Baez and Ugo Humbert, respectively.
For the last match of his career at the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000, Gaël Monfils faced a tough challenge against the number 8 seed Alexander Bublik.
The first set began with a break followed immediately by a break back, indicating a very tight match from the outset. The two players remained neck and neck until 5/4. At this crucial moment, Alexander Bublik made the difference and broke in the final game, allowing him to take the set 6/4.
The second set followed a quite similar scenario. The two players exchanged point for point throughout the set, without a significant gap. However, as in the first set, Gaël Monfils eventually conceded in the final game, giving Bublik the opportunity to conclude once again 6/4.
In the end, the match concluded with a score of 6/4-6/4 in favor of the Kazakh player. Overall, the encounter was contested and balanced, with little difference between the two players. The main difference was in serving: Bublik won 70% of his service points, compared to 59% for Monfils. He was also more effective on second serves, with 72% of points won on his own second serve and 58% success on returning the opponent’s second serve. In other areas of the game, there was no real dominance by either player, but Alexander Bublik managed to assert himself at some key moments of the match.
In the round of 16, Alexander Bublik will face the winner of the match between Jiri Lehecka and Alejandro Tabilo.
