The Withdrawal of Allianz Riviera from the 2030 Olympics Program in Nice Concludes the Impossibility of Hosting Men’s Ice Hockey in the City. A New Redistribution of Events is Underway, with Decisions Expected by Early June.
The 2030 Olympics bid in Nice is at a turning point. The initial plan involved hosting men’s ice hockey in a temporarily transformed Allianz Riviera. The municipal decision to withdraw the stadium from the Olympic program ends this arrangement.
Men’s hockey will not be possible in Nice under these conditions. The lack of an immediate alternative solution within the Nice area leads the organizing committee to reconsider its plans.
Renaud Muselier clarifies the framework. Different options will be explored “until early June.” The president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region emphasizes a blockage limited to one specific facility. “In Nice, the Olympic village is fine, the Cool (Olympic multipurpose complex) too, all events will be organized according to the initial modalities but there is this difficulty with the Allianz Riviera.”
The 2030 Olympic organizing committee acknowledges this point of blockage. A new phase of analysis is underway to ensure an organization compliant with IOC requirements. The issue of men’s hockey becomes a central concern in the redistribution of events.
A New Map of the 2030 Olympics Without Men’s Hockey in Nice
The Cojop launches a quick consultation with several regions. The goal is to identify existing infrastructures capable of hosting the men’s tournament in constrained timeframes.
Renaud Muselier details this process. “Thus, an initiative has been undertaken by the Cojop to see if, in compliance with the IOC’s standards, something could be organized elsewhere. We have asked Cojop to get in touch with Marseille, Gap, Grenoble, Albertville, and of course Lyon, to see if they can respond to this consultation in an exceptionally short time.”
The schedule remains tight. “The Cojop is going to present the revision of its dossier fairly quickly. We have between today and early June to receive feedback from the various regions and to know if they meet the level of requirement demanded by the IOC.”
This reorganization definitively moves men’s hockey away from Nice. Several cities are positioning themselves to recover this event, with the city of Lyon emerging as a favorite. The final decision will depend on the candidates’ ability to meet the imposed technical criteria.
Nice Retains Ice Events and Women’s Hockey
Despite losing men’s hockey, Nice remains central to the 2030 Olympics setup. The Nice site retains a key role in ice sports.
Women’s ice hockey is set to take place at the Palais des Expositions. This location confirms the persistence of an ice hub in the city. The Olympic village and the Olympic multipurpose complex remain part of the program.
Other disciplines are still planned in Nice at this stage. Figure skating, curling, and speed skating are subject to feasibility studies. Some events may be adjusted according to technical and logistical constraints. This is the case for speed skating, which could be relocated to Italy to maintain an Alpine presence.
The withdrawal of the Allianz Riviera from the Olympic program constitutes a first victory and a decisive decision for the municipality. This orientation redefines Nice’s place in the organization of the 2030 Olympics.
The final distribution of events is expected to be decided in the coming weeks. The decisions awaited by early June will specify the exact role of Nice in the 2020 Winter Olympic Games. It remains to be seen if the Azure capital will host even a partial closing ceremony and also an Olympic village for the skaters who will compete for the Olympic medals.
