An episode of strong swell will affect the Alpes-Maritimes coastline this Sunday, May 10, from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. Waves reaching two meters are expected along the entire coast. Authorities are calling for caution, particularly in unmonitored areas.

A phenomenon of strong swell will mark Sunday’s day on the Côte d’Azur. According to the prefecture of Alpes-Maritimes, the episode began at 6 a.m. and will continue until 8 p.m. A southerly swell will generate waves that can reach two meters, with a direct impact on coastal paths and creeks in the department. Backwash (agitation of the sea surface resulting from the interference of swell and its reflection against a coast or obstacles it encounters, editor’s note) may surprise walkers, particularly in exposed areas.

Authorities remind that swimming will remain “potentially dangerous” throughout the duration of the phenomenon. Unmonitored areas present an increased risk, while spring temperatures encourage people to enjoy the seaside. The sea will be at 15°C tomorrow. The safety message remains clear: “at sea, drowning can happen quickly. Avoid any risky behavior.” Access to jetties and areas close to the water is strongly discouraged.

This alert places coastal safety at the center of concerns. State services emphasize the need to adopt responsible behavior in the face of rough seas, even in the absence of strong winds. Walkers, sports enthusiasts and families are encouraged to plan their trips in advance and avoid areas exposed to backwash.
