While she was well into her tournament, with three impressive victories and notably the feat against Amanda Anisimova in the previous round, Diane Parry, the last French player in contention, was eliminated in the round of 16 on Monday.
Diane Parry, last French player at Roland-Garros 2026, decisively eliminated
Huge disappointment today on the main court of Roland-Garros. Diane Parry, sole French player from both draws in the second week, was largely dominated by her opponent of the day.
The Nice native will undoubtedly leave Paris with many regrets. Following her victory over American Amanda Anisimova, 6th in the world, and the early eliminations of important players such as Alexandrova (14) or Noskova (12), Diane Parry had a relatively favorable draw.
Facing Polish player Maja Chwalinska today in the round of 16, ranked 114th in the world and coming through qualifying, the French player was the favorite on paper. Yet on the court, things didn’t go as planned. Diane Parry started well in her match and displayed convincing tennis until the middle of the first set, before completely falling apart. Broken at 4 games to 3, the French player gave her opponent the opportunity to finish the first set on her serve, and she didn’t waste it. With 79% first serve percentage, Maja Chwalinksa took the first set 6/3.
In the second set, Diane Parry missed an early break opportunity in the 4th game. At 2 games all, the Nice player lost control, winning only two points for the rest of the match, not helped by her 17 unforced errors. The French player certainly felt the impact of an important match in which she had placed great hope. Less consistent on serve and in play, she therefore loses in 2 sets: (6/3-6/2).
Despite today’s underperformance, Diane Parry had a superb run at Roland-Garros 2026. For the second time in her career, she defeats a top 10 player – Anisimova, number 6 – and reaches the round of 16 at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her (young) career. Let’s hope the rest of her season follows suit, with more consistent performances and brilliant displays at important tournaments.
