Capoeira, a combat sport using mainly kicks, but also….
Capoeira, a combat sport using mainly kicks, but also:
• A dance, a body language, movements modeled on those of animals,
• Acrobatics: capoeiristas rival any gymnast!
• Music and songs, based on the “berimbau” and percussion,
• A philosophy, based on respect for the master, complicity with the opponent.
“Capoeira” translates into French as “clearing,” the space in which Brazilian slaves, coming essentially from Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries, would go to train in combat.
Little known to the rest of the world, Capoeira was only authorized in Brazil in 1937, when Master Bimba opened the first academy in Salvador de Bahia (northeast Brazil). Since then, capoeira has become internationalized while respecting its roots, and has become one of the most fashionable sports and means of expression in recent years.

The Festival of Capoeira on the French Riviera will take place in Antibes, on June 30, July 1 and 2, 2006. Following the success of previous editions (2003 and 2005), Capoeira Brasil is renewing this exceptional event!
The “Capoeira Festival” is an event during which Culture, Sport and … Celebration are joyfully mixed!
• Capoeira classes above all, but also dance classes (samba, maculélé…) and music: Afro-Brazilian instruments and percussion.
• Demonstrations of capoeira, maculélé, samba and Brazilian music.
• The “Baptism,” the grade advancement ceremony

The Instructor: Master Cibriba
Cibriba, the highest-ranking representative of the Capoeira Brasil group in France, was born in Fortaleza, capital of the state of Ceará (Brazil).
Cibriba holds a Brazilian diploma in physical education teaching.
Today with over 24 years of practice including 12 years of teaching, Cibriba has come to Nice and its surroundings to teach Capoeira, maculélé, instruments, music, singing…
Those who have already seen him during his interventions in capoeira workshops and meetings (in France and elsewhere) can testify that his arrival on the French Riviera is an exceptional event to be pleased about!
In Fortaleza, his work also resulted in the creation of the Poço das Dragas association in Brazil, (which he still manages today), whose goal is to help get children and adolescents out of their disadvantaged neighborhoods, in part through the practice of capoeira.
