In March 2025, accidents, serious injuries and deaths on the roads of Alpes-Maritimes decreased compared to March 2024. Despite this decline, controls have been strengthened and prevention measures are planned.

In March 2025, the roads of Alpes-Maritimes experienced fewer accidents than a year earlier. This is what the provisional data from the departmental road safety observatory shows. Three people lost their lives, compared to six in March 2024. There were also fewer serious injuries and fewer accidents.

The number of accidents resulting in injury stood at 56 in March 2025, compared to 68 in March 2024. This represents a decrease of nearly 18%. Serious injuries are also declining: 24 compared to 31 last year during the same period. The number of people killed dropped from six to three, a 50% decrease.

Since the beginning of the year, this trend is confirmed. From January 1 to March 31, 2025, seven people lost their lives in road accidents in the department, compared to 14 over the same period in 2024.

Strengthened controls and stricter penalties

The prefect of Alpes-Maritimes has strengthened safety measures. The number of license suspension orders has increased significantly. In March 2025, 411 decisions were made, compared to 334 in March 2024. This tightening is explained by the revision of the suspension schedule that came into force on February 1, 2025. This revision no longer provides tolerance for probationary license holders.

Control operations conducted by law enforcement have revealed numerous infractions. Despite the declining figures, the prefect calls on road users to “maintain a high level of vigilance” and to “strictly observe basic safety rules”.

Alcohol, drugs, mobile phone use while driving and speeding remain major concerns. The prefecture reminds that in 2024, 55 people died on the roads of the department. There were 54 in 2023.

Detailed figures show that pedestrians and motorcycle riders remain particularly exposed. In March 2025, one person riding a motorcycle lost their life, compared to four a year earlier. One pedestrian also died, compared to two in March 2024.

Fatal accidents occurred in built-up areas. No deaths were recorded on highways or outside built-up areas. The days involved were Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Victims were aged between 18 and over 65 years old.

The hourly distribution indicates that two deaths occurred between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., and one between noon and 8 p.m. No fatal accidents were recorded between 6 a.m. and noon.

Awareness campaigns scheduled

In addition to controls, several awareness campaigns are planned for April and May. They target different audiences: young people, employees, motorcyclists, students and road users in general.

Among the announced events: a day of awareness on road risks on April 25 at Parc Phoenix in Nice, in partnership with the city. On April 27 and 28, specific sessions for A2 license holders will be organized, with the National Gendarmerie and the 2RM06 association.

From May 12 to 16, a week will be devoted to road safety at work. Other initiatives will take place in schools, with mutual aid societies or foundations. They aim to strengthen prevention and remind people of the correct behavior to adopt on the road.

The prefecture provides complete accident statistics on its website. The next report will show whether the current trend continues in the coming months.
