The 11th edition of the “Camille-Muffat Memorial Trophy” took place on June 14 at the Valberg Golf Club. Family, close friends of the Olympic champion and personalities from the sports world gathered to pay tribute to the Nice swimmer who passed away in 2015. The morning was also marked by the presentation of the Youth and Sports medal to two committed volunteers from the region.
The Valberg Golf Club hosted on Sunday, June 14 the 11th edition of the “Camille-Muffat Memorial Trophy”, organized in memory of the Nice swimmer who passed away in 2015. Charles Ange Ginésy, president of the Alpes-Maritimes Department, and Marie-Amélie Ginésy, mayor of Péone, participated in this day alongside Camille Muffat’s parents and close friends.
Many personalities were also present, including Nelson Monfort, Stephen Roche, Anne Brottel, Alain Bideau and René Dies.
Created at the initiative of Nelson Monfort and Philippe Candeloro, the trophy has become over the years a gathering combining sport, memory and sharing. The 9-hole course at Valberg, located at 1,800 meters altitude, served as the setting for this new edition.
The morning began with a golf initiation open to the public and department staff. Led by an instructor, this introduction allowed participants to learn golf and discover the specificities of the mountain course.
A day to preserve the memory of Camille Muffat
Originally from Nice, Camille Muffat discovered skiing at Valberg, a resort particularly linked to the champion’s family history. In 2016, the clubhouse of the Valberg Golf Club was named after the swimmer at the initiative of the Alpes-Maritimes Department.
Each year, the trophy keeps alive the memory of the Olympic swimming medalist through the values associated with her athletic career.
In his remarks, Charles Ange Ginésy declared: “The Camille-Muffat Trophy brings us together every year around the values that Camille embodied with such strength and authenticity: courage, generosity, humility and self-improvement. Much more than a sporting competition, this gathering has become a privileged moment of memory, sharing and friendship. It keeps alive the memory of a great champion, while passing on to new generations the values that guided her exceptional career.”
The morning also included the presentation of the Youth and Sports medal to Christian Guemy, president of the Sports Club of the Gates of Mercantour in Valberg and president of Valberg Golf, as well as Marc Pugnaire, member of the regional ski committee.
Marc Pugnaire responded by saying: “I sincerely thank you for this distinction. I hope to be able to continue for a long time to commit myself as a volunteer, with the same passion and the same desire to serve, share and contribute to the life of our territory.”
For his part, Christian Guemy said: “I wish to dedicate this medal to my wife, who supports me every day with unwavering kindness and loyalty. This distinction is also hers, because none of this would have been possible without her presence by my side.”
Marie-Amélie Ginésy emphasized the importance of keeping the memory of the champion alive at the resort: “It is essential for us to keep alive and preserve the memory of Camille at this magnificent Valberg golf course, in a resort that was dear to her and that shares her values of self-improvement, excellence and conviviality.”
Through this 11th edition of the “Camille-Muffat Memorial Trophy”, Valberg once again brought together the world of sport, the swimmer’s loved ones and regional stakeholders in a tribute dedicated to the memory of the Nice Olympic champion.
