PAZ protests against the captivity of panther Ranny in front of the Pathé Massena

The Projet Animaux Zoopolis (PAZ) association organized a happening outside the Pathé Massena cinema this Monday, August 3rd. On the occasion of the screening of the film “The Golden Triangle” by Hélène Rosselet-Ruiz, they are protesting against the use of the panther Ranny in captivity. For them, “animals are not actors”.

This peaceful demonstration, at 31 avenue Jean Médecin, aims to raise awareness among people about the living conditions of animals in captivity. Ranny, a black panther belonging to Mariana Gruss, was used in numerous film productions. Jeannethe Valdes, PAZ representative for the Alpes-Maritimes department, explained that the association has attempted several times to discourage her exploitation, without success.

“The Golden Triangle“ nevertheless addresses the plight of two women imprisoned by their condition. “The producer and director are feeding a system of enslavement that they want to denounce. For a few minutes in the film The Golden Triangle, Ranny is imprisoned for life and suffers the violence of training,” said Amandine Sanvisens, the association’s co-founder. She wishes for the panther to be placed in a sanctuary.

Raising public awareness about captivity

Jeannethe Valdes stressed the importance of raising public awareness about the conditions of these animals. To support this message, many signs proclaim that “animals are not actors.” A 20-year-old man, Rayane O., admitted that he had not “realized the situation in which non-domestic animals, used in films, live. In the future, [he] will no longer watch films that exploit them.”

The PAZ association often protests for the welfare of animals. This time, they protested against the film industry which continues to use animals. Yet this seems not to displease a certain audience who “sees nothing wrong with it,” said a woman in her sixties, Alba*, as she left the film screening.

According to the representative, many alternatives exist. She cited the example of many blockbusters that use only “stunning special effects.” The association promotes the end of captivity of animals in the film industry.

Towards change in the film industry

This fight against the exploitation of wild animals in cinema is now being brought before the National Assembly. The MP, Danielle Simmonet, who strongly supports PAZ, submitted a bill on June 6, 2026. Jeannette V. emphasizes “the need to fill this legal void. It is a gap in the 2021 law that overlooked the artistic creation sector.”

According to her, the exploitation of wild animals is due to “collective responsibility”. From the simple moviegoer who buys a ticket to the director who is aware of the captivity, everyone participates in this exploitation.

While awaiting the desired legislative advances, the association continues its fight. Now it is against the use of frogs and lizards in Fort Boyard that Jeannette V is working.
