In the night of Sunday, August 16, 2026, around 11 p.m., two boats collided in the Bay of Cannes. Ten people were injured and a 24-year-old young man went missing at sea. Search efforts to find him were unsuccessful. 

An accident occurred between a yacht about ten meters long and a semi-rigid boat off Théoule-sur-Mer, in the Cannes bay, on Sunday, August 16 around 11 p.m. Among the 21 individuals on board the vessels, six people are in relative emergency and four in absolute emergency. Mostly teenagers, they were evacuated to hospitals in Cannes, Antibes, Nice and Toulon by the Mediterranean Regional Operational Surveillance and Rescue Center (CROSS MED). A 24-year-old man went missing at sea.

Search efforts halted by the maritime authority

The young man was initially on the semi-rigid boat at the time of the incident. A helicopter and boats from the SNSM and the SDIS were immediately deployed to try to find him. Initially suspended, the rescue attempt resumed early Monday, August 17, without success. Around 11 a.m., after the intervention of 64 firefighters and their 32 vehicles, the Mediterranean maritime authority announced halting the search.

A judicial investigation opened under the authority of the Marseille court

A judicial investigation has been opened under the authority of the Marseille maritime court to determine the exact reasons for the incident. It is being handled in collaboration with the coastal nautical brigade (BNC) of Antibes of the Alpes-Maritimes departmental gendarmerie grouping and the Mediterranean maritime gendarmerie grouping.
