The restaurant La Barque Bleue offers to play the bill “Oh Happy dé”

The restaurant La Barque Bleue, located on the port of Nice, offers an unusual way to avoid paying the bill. If the number six appears when rolling the dice at the time of payment, then the bill is offered by the house, with no limit.

Located at 7 quai des Deux-Emmanuels, the restaurant La Barque Bleue transforms the moment of paying the bill into a moment of conviviality. This institution of the Port, taken over by Christian in 2019, decided to launch the « Oh Happy Dice » since the beginning of September.

The principle is simple: when paying the bill, the server brings a tray and a dice to the table. Diners can only roll the dice once and, if it lands on six, the bill is erased. This is only possible between 10 am and noon, then from 5 pm to 7 pm.

Christian: « We wanted people to leave with a memory, not just with a bill »

Christian, the manager, was inspired by this concept after seeing it circulate on social media in June 2026. It was then that he mentions it to the restaurant’s communications officer, Laurena Couppey. She then researches the concept further, « which comes straight from London, then [developed] in Manchester […] It really generates a lot of queues there and it’s not a concept we’ve seen here», she specifies.

This way of pleasing customers was a much warmer alternative to traditional happy hours. For him, it was preferable to offer this operation rather than 25% discounts, so that it would be pleasant for both customers and the restaurant.

« We wanted people to leave with a memory, not just with a bill. The dice makes the whole room laugh, even those who lose. And when it lands on six, believe me, everyone hears it », exclaims the owner.

The six that brings happiness

In the dining room, «the enthusiasm is immediate», confides Mara, a server at La Barque Bleue. Customer reactions are the same, whether they are aware of the Happy Dice or not. They never refuse to roll it, and the concept actually attracts more regular customers during these time slots.

Since its launch, stories keep accumulating. Laurena Couppey notably mentions a large table of thirty-somethings who were offered a bill of 200 euros, even though they were unaware of the concept. They returned the next day and rolled a six again, winning a second free bill.

Word of mouth as well as social media have contributed to the arrival of new customers. This is the case with Bryan and his friend Ali, who learned about the concept via Instagram. They were offered their beers and did not hesitate to exclaim in the restaurant.

The dice « are not rigged », affirms Laurena Couppey. In response, the restaurant also offers to bring your own dice, which will be verified by the servers beforehand. All the more reason to make this end of meal even more pleasant.
