“Les saveurs solidaires” a new social grocery store opens its doors to the most vulnerable. Located at 2 Rue Raspail, Nice.

14% of Nice’s population lives below the poverty line. Due to rising prices, it is becoming difficult for these families to meet their needs. Proposed and managed by Nice’s CCAS, a new social grocery store is opening its doors at 2 Rue Raspail. A social grocery store aims to help people in precarious situations, such as single-parent families, seniors, and the working poor. These people benefit from high-quality food products at lower costs.

The CCAS is in charge of directing vulnerable people to the grocery store. Subsequently, they put together a file to allow them to obtain low prices. Currently, ten families are benefiting from this project. Ultimately, the grocery store’s goal is to accommodate up to 150 households maximum.

The monthly basket costs €40 compared to €150 in a supermarket. The most purchased products are usually fruits and vegetables, as well as hygiene products.

On each product, there are two prices; the white price is the market price, and the yellow is the grocery store’s price. The products are either numbered or have a barcode. The cashier informs the beneficiary of the total amount due, which can only be paid in cash. Starting next week, the grocery store will begin accepting card payments.

Major retailers support the grocery store

The social grocery store is a meeting place that creates a social link. The goal is to allow individuals to meet and support each other. It is also a learning place for better eating habits. Volunteers plan to set up workshops on health, notably in partnership with associations like “the diabetes house.”

Many partners are involved with the social grocery store to provide sufficient resources. These include the Food Bank, Nice’s Central Kitchen, La Banaste de Marianne Carrefour TNL, Dons Solidaires, Nature and Goods Donation Agencies, and many others. These partners help to achieve the grocery store’s objectives.

A social grocery store open to all except students, who will not benefit from this project. In fact, numerous student social grocery stores are already established to help the younger population.
