An Advisory Council for more grassroots democracy

Latest News

Participatory democracy is something else and is not limited to making proposals that may or may not be accepted, depending on the goodwill of the prince.

In fact, one might talk about the establishment of a local body that will allow a greater number of people to contribute their vision, or even their expertise on everyday life topics, to have a different perspective on certain arguments, to experience political life (even without an official role), to showcase themselves and to be considered… for future elected positions.

138 people are part of this council, some from civil society, others reclassified politicians, and still others with multiple hats, always seen in various capacities, along with friends of friends, who are also always present when the train stops. This advisory council is co-chaired by the mayor of Nice and Professor Tahar Saïah, vice-president of the University of Nice, economist, and specialist in integration issues.

The appointees will be divided into 7 commissions and will be able to submit proposals to the City Council.

On the occasion of the establishment of this Council, Christian Estrosi recalled the main themes of the life of the “polis” and the roadmap which, in addition to strengthening the links between civic life and politics, should lead to a “charter of participatory democracy”.

While waiting to see the final result, it would already be auspicious not to confuse proximity with participation – and it is known from experience – and not just simply to add adjectives (direct, representative, participatory) to the noun (democracy).

For now, let’s simply salute all these volunteers who, out of a spirit of service, ambition, or ego, will nonetheless foster a civic debate that is certainly beneficial and useful.

The flowers are thrown, the cherry time will be a little later…
