At the Municipal Archives: the exhibition “Nice 1915: Italy Enters the War”

Latest News

The series of initiatives for the commemoration of the Centenary of the Great War, launched with the turning point of the war in Nice in 1914, continues with a new title: “Nice 1915: Italy Enters the War,” which will be the subject of an exhibition at the Municipal Archives until December 18.

The exhibition, through numerous unpublished documents, objects, testimonies, and loans from individuals, will pay tribute to all the Italians who built Nice and served during World War I under the uniform of the Kingdom of Italy or that of the French Republic, as well as the Sardinian past before 1860.

As a major border city, Nice exemplifies the ties that unite France and Italy and the strong relationship and cooperation between the Latin sisters.

At the entry into the war in the spring of 1915, 30,000 Italian nationals (one quarter of the population) lived in Nice. Many returned from the front and settled permanently, some choosing to become French.

At the Rauba-Capeรน Monument to the Dead, the names of the Garibaldian volunteers who enlisted, in memory of Giuseppe Garibaldi, as early as the summer of 1914 to fight in the Argonne under the French uniform, are inscribed.

Readings, concerts, and conferences will punctuate the program that will accompany the exhibition.
