Five hikes to do around Nice to gain elevation

Latest News

Nice offers ideal terrain for hiking enthusiasts. Within a few minutes by car, bus or train, it is possible to leave the city and reach trails that cross Mediterranean forests, perched villages and panoramic ridges. Nice Premium’s editorial team proposes five accessible hikes around the Azure Coast capital, perfect for escaping for a day.

Mont Chauve d’Aspremont, the great panorama of the metropolis

Dominating the Nice plain at over 850 meters altitude, the Mont Chauve d’Aspremont is one of the most emblematic peaks in the heights around Nice. The departure is generally from the village of Aspremont.

The climb crosses typically Mediterranean vegetation: pines, green oaks and fragrant scrubland. After approximately two hours of walking, the summit offers a spectacular 360-degree view. On one side, the Bay of Angels and the Mediterranean; on the other, the reliefs of the Mercantour National Park. In clear weather, you can even distinguish the Italian peaks. A fairly accessible hike that amply rewards the effort.

Baou de Saint-Jeannet, the mythical cliff

It is impossible to talk about hiking in the Nice hinterland without mentioning the Baou de Saint-Jeannet. This immense rocky bar dominates the perched village of Saint-Jeannet. The trail starts in the village streets before gradually rising towards the cliff. The climb can be sporty on certain sections, but the path remains accessible for regular walkers.

Upon reaching the summit plateau, the panorama is spectacular: the coast extends from Nice to Cape Antibes, while the hinterland reveals a succession of valleys and mountains. A spot also favored by paragliders.

Mont Boron, hiking with a view of the sea

Located east of Nice, Mont Boron is one of the most accessible natural spaces from the city center.

Several trails wind through the hill through a pine forest. The hike can be adapted depending on available time: a simple one-hour walk or a longer route connecting different viewpoints. The summit offers an exceptional panorama of Villefranche Bay and the Bay of Angels. An ideal itinerary for a nature outing without leaving the metropolis.

Mont Vinaigrier, nature at the city gates

Just a few kilometers from the center, Mont Vinaigrier offers several routes through Mediterranean forest.

The trails wind between Aleppo pines and green oaks, with regular viewpoints over Nice and the coast. The hike is relatively easy and can be done in one to two hours. It is one of the favorite walks for Nice residents for a quick nature outing.

Mont Macaron, a ridge above the Paillon valley

Less well-known than other peaks, Mont Macaron dominates the Paillon valley above the village of Tourrette-Levens.

The climb is through fairly dense Mediterranean vegetation before reaching an exposed ridge. The summit offers a remarkable panorama over the Nice hinterland and surrounding reliefs. The hike is somewhat more sporty than the previous ones, but it remains accessible to most experienced walkers.

Bonus: hikes between vineyards and Mediterranean heritage

Beyond the Nice territory, certain itineraries allow combining hiking and discovering Mediterranean wine heritage. This is notably the idea developed in the work Randos vin Méditerranée, which proposes around forty routes in southern France.

The book invites hikers to traverse landscapes shaped by vineyards, sometimes following the traces of the ancient Via Domitia, which once connected Italy to Spain. These itineraries cross villages, wine estates and historical sites, offering another way to discover Mediterranean terroirs.
