The Eagles will have to wait a bit longer to secure a victory in 2010. For the first time since 1996, they lost the derby in Monaco on Saturday night. A logical defeat, 3 – 2, was followed by terrible scenes of violence at the Louis II stadium. Goals by Park (19th, 60th) and Nenรช (62nd) overcame a Nice team that was still too weak. Ben Saada (55th) and Digard (81st) couldn’t turn the tide. The final ten minutes of combat from the red and blacks, reignited by Digard’s magnificent free kick, will be remembered. OGCN is now in 16th place in the standings, with a 6-point lead over the relegation zone.
Terrible and intolerable scenes of violence
But it was after the final whistle that Nice football hit rock bottom. After calling for the resignation of the management during the game, Nice supporters distinguished themselves in a very unfortunate way. Asked to remain in their stand momentarily for safety reasons, some of the 1,500 Eagles supporters invaded the turf of the Louis II stadium. Insulted and threatened, the police responded with tear gas. Then, supporters breached the barriers to find themselves on the field. Pseudo-supporters attacked the few Monegasque spectators and the police. Result: terrible and intolerable scenes of violence in the football world. Rama Yade, Secretary of State for Sports, described these events as “unacceptable.” The club risks heavy financial penalties. On Sunday morning, the Eagles discovered their training center vandalized and damaged.
